Meet Rebecca
Rebecca is an accomplished family law attorney known for combining sophisticated legal strategy with practical, client-focused advocacy. Rebecca has devoted her career to family and matrimonial law, representing clients in complex divorces, high-conflict parenting disputes, business and asset valuation matters, support issues, trials, appeals, negotiations, mediation, and other challenging family law matters. She understands that no two families—and no two divorces or estate plans—are alike. Her approach begins with understanding what matters most to the client and developing a strategy designed around that client's family, finances, and future.
Rebecca is an experienced trial attorney, but she does not believe that every case belongs in a courtroom. She is also trained in mediation and collaborative law and believes that excellent family law attorneys must know both when to fight and when to find a better path forward.
Rebecca's involvement in family law extends well beyond her own practice. She serves on the Board of Governors of the Illinois State Bar Association and is a member of the ISBA Family Law Section Council and Women and the Law Committee. She has also been appointed to the Circuit Court of Cook County Committee on Domestic Violence Court and is actively involved in organizations dedicated to advancing women in the legal profession and supporting survivors of domestic violence.
Her connection to the Cook County Domestic Relations Division began before she became an attorney, when she served as a law clerk to the Presiding Judge of the Domestic Relations Division. That experience gave Rebecca an early and invaluable perspective on how family law cases are evaluated and decided. She has since built a practice representing clients in courts throughout Cook, Lake, DuPage, and surrounding counties.
Rebecca is a frequent speaker and writer on family law, domestic violence, women's issues, legal ethics, technology, and emerging issues affecting families. She has taught family law at DePaul University College of Law and regularly presents to attorneys and other professionals.
Her work has been recognized by her peers throughout her career. Rebecca has been included in The Best Lawyers in America® in Family Law since 2014 and has been selected to Illinois Super Lawyers since 2022 and before then, Illinois Rising Stars, each year since practicing.
Rebecca founded Berlin Melzer Law around a simple principle: clients deserve exceptional legal work without losing the human connection that matters so much in family law. She has built a team that shares that philosophy—prepared, strategic, ethical, responsive, and deeply invested in the people they represent. Rebecca earned her J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. She lives in the Chicagoland area with her husband and three children.
